5 tips: How to fill in your CV template the right way
A template is only as good as its content. Unfortunately, many applicants underestimate the CV and end up hurting their own chances. To make sure that does not happen to you, we have pulled together the most important points from our career blog.
1. Structure: KISS (keep it short and simple)
Building a professional CV is not rocket science. Our template is built around these 4 key sections:
- Personal details: First name, last name, contact information (including a professional email address!) and ideally a friendly profile photo.
- Work experience: Your jobs, experience, and internships.
- Skills: Further education, languages, IT skills (e.g. SAP, Python, Adobe Suite).
- Interests: Hobbies or volunteer work that reflect your personality.
2. Reverse chronological is the standard
We strongly recommend structuring your CV in reverse chronological order. That means starting with your most recent position and working backwards.
Why? HR specialists prefer this format because it puts your most recent, and most relevant, experience front and center. Nobody wants to scroll through your primary school years to find out what you can do today.
3. Facts, not prose
Your CV is a collection of facts, not a novel.
- Left: Time periods (month/year)
- Right: Facts (position, employer, responsibilities)
Avoid running text. Use concise, meaningful bullet points instead. Most importantly: do not just list your responsibilities, highlight your achievements. What did you actually accomplish? Did you increase revenue? Deliver a project ahead of schedule? Numbers make a strong impression and significantly boost the impact of your qualifications.
4. Tailor your CV to the role
A strong CV rarely fits two different job postings perfectly. Recruiters can immediately tell when they are looking at a mass application. Our advice: be selective. Do not pack the template with every side job you had 15 years ago if it is not relevant to the position. Focus is quality.
5. Gaps? Honesty is always the best policy
Every detail in your CV MUST be truthful. Providing false information can cost you your job even after you have been hired. Have a gap in your CV (sabbatical, career change, caregiving)? Address it openly or prepare to explain it confidently in the interview.

FAQ CV
In Switzerland, the rule is: as short as possible, as detailed as necessary. For most applicants, one page is sufficient. Those with a lot of relevant experience may go up to two pages. Anything beyond that tends to feel cluttered and is rarely read in full by hiring managers.
A photo is not mandatory, but it makes your application more personal and helps you stand out. We have summarized what to keep in mind if you decide to include one here.
It depends on how you are applying. PDF is the safest choice when applying directly by email or through a job portal – the layout stays consistent across all devices. Word makes sense when a company explicitly requests an editable document, or when you know they are using an older ATS that cannot reliably read PDFs. When in doubt: PDF.
ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System. Many companies use these programs to automatically scan and filter incoming applications before a human ever sees them. An ATS-friendly CV is structured so that these systems can read it without errors: clean layout, no graphics or columns, standard fonts, and relevant keywords from the job posting. Paying attention to these details increases the chances of your application reaching the right hands.
As a general rule: apply in the language of the job posting. In German-speaking Switzerland, that is usually German. For international companies or English-language listings, English is the way to go. If you are unsure, it is perfectly fine to ask. It shows attention to detail and genuine interest.
