Artificial Intelligence in Recruiting
Internal Coopers Workshop

from Dr. Elena D’Cruz
25. May 2023

Ask artificial intelligence (AI) for a definition of itself and you get the following answer: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science concerned with the development of systems and technologies that enable human-like thinking, learning, and problem solving. It refers to the ability of computers and machines to analyze information, recognize patterns, draw conclusions, and perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence.
Normally. For many, the independence of technology still feels unnormal. Calls for a research stop and headlines like "Elon Musk warns AI could cause 'civilization destruction' even as he invests in it" fuel an understandable degree of insecurity. And yet – artificial intelligence is already embedded in our (working) everyday life, sometimes more, sometimes less consciously. Virtual assistants support us around the clock, recommendation programs inspire us during a Netflix movie night, image recognition sorts out cluttered photo galleries on our smartphones, and then, of course, there are topics such as autonomously driving cars that make us curious about the possibilities of AI.
AI also offers many advantages in recruiting, such as intelligent translation of application documents, LinkedIn AI plugin, or more precise talent acquisition through intelligent databases.
With the rapid pace of developments, it is not that easy to keep track and sort out which applications create real added value. This is why Coopers arranged an internal workshop on artificial intelligence in recruiting. Elena Jansky, Quality & Process Manager, told us more about it in an interview.
Interview: Artificial Intelligence in Recruiting
Elena, why did you organize the workshop?
We organized the workshop because AI is becoming more and more present in all fields and offers numerous advantages and opportunities in recruiting as well. Chatbots in particular show great potential to make the recruiting process more efficient and innovative. We aim to have our finger on the pulse and to use these new technologies in the best way possible for our recruitment.
What was the most important goal of the workshop?
It was important to us to make the workshop practice-oriented in order to generate concrete day-to-day applications. However, we also consciously considered topics such as stereotypes, data protection and ethics. Our goal was to create awareness for a responsible approach to AI in recruiting.
How do you see the future of AI in recruiting?
We see enormous potential for AI in recruiting, but at the same time we are aware that the human factor will continue to play a central role in the future. Human expertise, empathy and decision-making skills are still indispensable for making high-quality hires. AI can support us and take work off our hands, but in the end, we as humans, remain at the center and often make the crucial difference when it comes to partnering up with candidates and customers.
Thank you for your input and the insightful workshop, Elena. The other participants and I learned a lot from it – thank you and also thanks to Benni and Laura who organizing it together with you.
We will certainly continue to write about artificial intelligence in recruiting on the Coopers blog, report on our experiences and we would be very happy to exchange views on this topic with you.
